A Memoir of the Future

Varoufakis begins Another Now with a memoir of his time as Greece's finance minister. He recounts the challenges he faced in trying to negotiate a new deal with the European Union, and the ultimately unsuccessful attempt to implement a new economic program. This personal narrative provides a vivid backdrop for the political and economic analysis that follows.

A Political Theory of Utopia

In the second part of Another Now, Varoufakis develops a political theory of utopia. He argues that utopia is not a place or a time, but rather a process of continuous struggle and transformation. Utopia is not about achieving a perfect society, but about constantly striving to improve the world we live in.

A Science Fiction of Dystopia

In the third part of Another Now, Varoufakis turns to science fiction to explore the dystopian realities of the present. He imagines a future in which technology has been used to create a surveillance state, and in which the gap between the rich and the poor has grown even wider. This dystopian vision serves as a warning about the dangers of the present, and a call to action for a better future.

A Journey Through Hope and Despair

Another Now is a book that is both hopeful and despairing. Varoufakis does not shy away from the challenges facing the world, but he also believes that a better future is possible. He writes: "We must never give up on utopia, even when it seems impossible. We must always strive to create a better world, even when we know that we may fail." Another Now is a powerful and provocative book that will challenge readers to think about the future of humanity.
