Cherokee Journey: From Dropout To Professor By Dr. Autumn Asher Blackbear Lighting The Fire: A Cherokee Journey From Dropout To Professor

Dr. Autumn Asher Blackbear's memoir, Cherokee Journey: From Dropout to Professor, is a powerful and inspiring story of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.

Blackbear was born into poverty on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother, who struggled with alcoholism and mental illness. Blackbear attended school sporadically and dropped out in the ninth grade.

After dropping out of school, Blackbear worked a series of dead-end jobs. She was pregnant with her first child at the age of 18. Desperate to provide a better life for her family, she decided to go back to school.

Blackbear enrolled in a community college and began taking classes part-time. She struggled at first, but she was determined to succeed. She worked hard and eventually earned her associate's degree.

Blackbear then transferred to a four-year university, where she continued to excel. She earned her bachelor's degree in social work and went on to earn her master's degree in education. In 2016, she earned her doctorate in education from the University of Oklahoma.

Today, Blackbear is a professor of education at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. She is also the director of the university's Native American Studies Program. Blackbear is passionate about helping other Native American students succeed in college.

Cherokee Journey is more than just a memoir. It is a story that speaks to the power of education to transform lives. Blackbear's journey is a testament to the fact that it is never too late to follow your dreams.
