By Susan Carol Mitchell
In her powerful and moving memoir, My Cultural Birthrights and Other Black Gold, Susan Carol Mitchell explores the complex and often painful history of race and culture in America, and the personal journey of one woman's search for identity and belonging.
Mitchell was born into a poor black family in the segregated South. Her father was a sharecropper, and her mother worked as a domestic. Mitchell grew up surrounded by racism and discrimination, but she also learned about the rich cultural heritage of her people.
As she grew older, Mitchell began to question the world around her. She wanted to know why black people were treated so differently from white people. She wanted to know why she had to live in such poverty. And she wanted to know where she belonged.
Mitchell's search for answers led her to the Civil Rights Movement. She marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., and she worked to register black voters. She also began to write about her experiences, and her writing helped her to make sense of the world around her.
My Cultural Birthrights and Other Black Gold is a powerful and moving account of one woman's journey of identity and resilience. It is a story that will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with the issues of race and culture.
"Susan Carol Mitchell has written a powerful and moving memoir that explores the complex and often painful history of race and culture in America, and the personal journey of one woman's search for identity and belonging.
