Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison were two of the most brilliant inventors in history. Their rivalry over the development of the electrical grid shaped the way we use electricity today. This book tells the story of their lives and their feud, and explores the impact of their work on the world we live in.

The Early Years

Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, Croatia, in 1856. He showed an early interest in electricity, and by the age of 17, he had built his first electric motor. In 1884, he moved to the United States to work for Thomas Edison.

Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, in 1847. He was a self-taught inventor who had already made a name for himself with the invention of the light bulb. In 1887, he founded the Edison Electric Light Company.

The War of the Currents

In the late 1880s, Tesla and Edison became rivals in the development of the electrical grid. Tesla advocated for the use of alternating current (AC),while Edison favored direct current (DC). AC is more efficient than DC, but it is also more dangerous. Edison used this to his advantage, launching a public relations campaign to discredit Tesla's AC system.

The "War of the Currents" reached its climax in 1893 at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Tesla's AC system was chosen to power the fair, and it was a resounding success. This marked the beginning of the end for DC, and AC soon became the standard for the electrical grid.

The Legacy of Tesla and Edison

Tesla and Edison were both brilliant inventors who made significant contributions to the development of electricity. Tesla's AC system is the foundation of the electrical grid we use today, and Edison's inventions, such as the light bulb and the phonograph, have had a profound impact on our lives.

The rivalry between Tesla and Edison was a complex one. There was mutual respect, but also a great deal of animosity. However, their feud ultimately benefited the world, as it led to the development of a more efficient and safer electrical grid.

Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison were two of the most important inventors in history. Their rivalry over the development of the electrical grid shaped the way we use electricity today. This book tells the story of their lives and their feud, and explores the impact of their work on the world we live in.
