Early Life and Career
Pearl Buck was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, in 1892. Her parents were missionaries who had spent many years in China. Buck grew up in China and was educated at the Shanghai American School. She began writing at a young age and published her first novel, East Wind: West Wind, in 1928.
The Good Earth
Buck's most famous novel, The Good Earth, was published in 1931. The novel tells the story of a Chinese peasant family and their struggles to survive in a harsh and unforgiving land. The novel was a critical and commercial success and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932.
Social Justice and Human Rights
In addition to her writing, Buck was also a tireless advocate for social justice and human rights in China. She was outspoken in her criticism of the Chinese government's treatment of its people and worked to promote education and healthcare in rural China. Buck also founded the Pearl S. Buck Foundation in 1964 to provide assistance to orphaned and abandoned children in China.
Legacy
Pearl Buck died in 1973 at the age of 80. She left behind a legacy of literary and humanitarian work that continues to inspire people around the world. Her novel The Good Earth has been translated into more than 30 languages and has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. Buck's work has also been adapted into several films and television shows.
