About the Author
Milada Souckova was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1921. She studied art and writing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1941, she married Jiri Soucek, a fellow artist. The couple had two children.
During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Milada and her husband were active in the resistance movement. They helped to smuggle food and supplies to Jewish families and to hide resistance fighters. After the war, Milada continued to work as an artist and writer. She also became active in the Communist Party.
In 1948, the Communists seized power in Czechoslovakia. Milada and her husband were arrested and imprisoned. They were released in 1953, but they were never allowed to work in their professions again.
Milada and her husband continued to live in Prague until their deaths in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
