In her debut novel, When the Cherry Blossoms Fell, Japanese author Sayaka Murata weaves a haunting and evocative tale of love, loss, and the power of memory. Set against the backdrop of the cherry blossom season in Japan, the novel tells the story of a young woman's journey to come to terms with the loss of her lover.

The protagonist of the novel is a young woman named Naoko. She is a talented artist who lives a quiet and solitary life in Tokyo. One day, she meets a young man named Hiroki at a cherry blossom festival. Hiroki is a musician, and the two of them quickly fall in love. Their relationship is passionate and intense, but it is also short-lived. Hiroki is killed in a car accident just a few months after they meet.

Naoko is devastated by Hiroki's death. She is unable to come to terms with her loss, and she begins to withdraw from the world. She quits her job, stops painting, and spends her days alone in her apartment. Her friends and family worry about her, but they are unable to help her.

One day, Naoko receives a letter from Hiroki. The letter was written shortly before his death, and it contains a message of love and hope. Naoko is deeply moved by the letter, and it helps her to begin to heal. She slowly starts to come out of her shell, and she begins to paint again. Her paintings are inspired by her memories of Hiroki, and they are full of love, loss, and beauty.

When the Cherry Blossoms Fell is a haunting and evocative novel that explores the themes of love, loss, and the power of memory. It is a beautifully written and deeply moving story that will stay with readers long after they finish reading it.
