Sacajawea was born around 1788 in the Lemhi Valley of present-day Idaho. She was a member of the Shoshone tribe, and her name means "Bird Woman." The explorers were unable to find a way to portage their boats around the falls, and they were on the verge of giving up. But Sacajawea knew of a portage route that she had used as a child, and she led the expedition to safety.
Sacajawea's journey with Lewis and Clark was full of challenges and dangers. She witnessed the death of her first child, and she nearly drowned in the Yellowstone River. But she never gave up, and she continued to serve the expedition faithfully. She was a true hero, and her story is an inspiration to us all.
