The Life of Thomas More: A Gripping Tale of Faith, Ambition, and Tragedy
A Man of His Time
Thomas More was born in London in 1478, during a tumultuous period in English history. The Wars of the Roses had recently ended, and the Tudor dynasty had just come to power. More was a brilliant scholar, and he quickly rose through the ranks of the legal profession. He became a successful lawyer and was appointed to several high-ranking government positions.
More was also a devout Catholic, and he was deeply involved in the religious controversies of his time. He opposed the Protestant Reformation, and he defended the authority of the Pope. This put him in conflict with the English government, which had broken away from the Catholic Church.
A Man of Principle
In 1532, More was appointed Lord Chancellor of England. This was the highest office in the land, and it gave More great power and influence. However, More's tenure as Lord Chancellor was short-lived. He refused to support the king's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, and he was dismissed from office.
